Rival gangster pics in box office shootout

By Jonathan Bing

NEW YORK (Variety) - Next summer's movie release slate is so crowded that two megabudget period dramas have staked out the same date in July.

Miramax has scheduled , its all-star Martin Scorsese-helmed gangster picture, for July 12 -- a date claimed a few days ago by DreamWorks' Road to Perdition, an all-star gangster picture directed by Sam Mendes.

Gangs, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz, and Road, which features Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, surely would cannibalize each other's audiences if neither studio blinks and shifts it film.

But there is little real estate left in a summer already crowded with highly anticipated fare such as Spider-Man, Men in Black 2, Scooby-Doo and the next Star Wars installment.
