From: The Hollywood Reporter - Dec. 12, 2001:

Gangs to hit streets in summer

By Jeffrey R. Sipe

NEW YORK --- Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York," originally expected to be released this month and then tentatively pushed back to the spring, is now looking at a summer release.

"It's really a summer movie," a Miramax executive said this week by way of explanation.

Rumors circulated widely last month that the original release date had been changed because of a dispute between Scorsese and Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein over the film's length. Word was that Weinstein was pressuring Scorsese to shorten the film, though a Miramax spokesperson insisted at the time that the delay stemmed from a lack of a score and that "we could have finished the film in time for a December release, but we didn't want to rush it."

Both Weinstein and Scorsese have insisted that the reports of a dispute were untrue and that the movie's final cut is and always has been Scorsese's.

The German newspaper Koelner Stadtanzeiger has a great interview with Michael Ballhaus:

A quote about Leonardo

Michael Ballhaus, the famous photographer who filmed "Gangs of New York" in Rome and won an award for his work in Berlin recently, talked about his work with Scorsese with film students in Cologne:

Q:Is it true that the camera loves certain human beings?

Michael Ballhaus:I want to express it like this: There are actors who play their scene for the audience, which is the camera. I saw this in a wonderful way at Leonardo DiCaprio in "Gangs of New York". He has the wonderful ability, to play for the camera; in a way it´s in his blood. You can say the camera loves him, but actually it´s like that he loves the camera, because he sees it as his audience.

Di Caprio Denies Report He Bad-Mouthed Gangs

Leonardo DiCaprio has denied a report that appeared on the MSNBC website last week claiming that he was trying to renegotiate his contract for Martin Scorsese's upcoming because he was disappointed with the film. The original item, written by columnist Jeannette Walls, has been revised and now contains a quote from a DiCaprio spokesman saying, "Leonardo DiCaprio says that the experience of working on the film has been the highlight of his career. He has never ever believed in a project more strongly than this one. Neither he nor his representative has ever sought to renegotiate his contract. And whomever (sic) is alleging that statement is lying."

Gangs of New York is postponed !

Joint statement by Martin Scorsese and Harvey Weinstein (co-chairman of Miramax Films) on Gangs of New York:

"We have both thouroughly enjoyed together Gangs of New York and look forward to sharing it with audiences.

Our decision to postpone the film´s release is based on its setting in downtown Manhattan during Civil War in the midst of the 1860´s draft riots - one of the most difficult and challenging times in American history.

In light of the ever-changing current events, we have chosen to err on the side of sensitivity and postpone the wide release of the film until 2002."

---

There might be a chance however that the film will be released in a few selected American cinemas this year so that it could be entitled for Oscar nominations.

Entertainment Weekly has a preview for GONY with a quote of Martin Scorsese:

He said Leonardo´s post-Titanic superstardom had nothing to do with his selection: "Before his rise, all I knew was that he was one of the best actors around. He was certainly in the tradition of actors I admired, like De Niro, Hoffman, and Pacino... and it seemed like the torch had been passed to him. People would say Marty, someday you should work with this person.' So in my mind he was always an actor, not a movie star."

Extra editor to slash Gangs Of New York

Martin Scorsese has hired a second film editor to work on Gangs Of New York in a bid to cut the movie to a workable length. A rough cut of the gangster epic clocked in at four hours. The aim is to cut it to a running length of around two hours and 20 minutes in time for its planned US release in December.A source told the Daily Mail: "It's all in hand, Martin knows what he's doing and has hired accordingly."

Hollywood Confidential by Jeffrey Wells:

"We all know Miramax will be pushing hard for Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, an expensive, occasionally violent period drama (i.e., the mid-1850s) with Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz,...

I've read Gangs and found it less than wonderful. The $90-to-$100 million production follows a Godfather-like arc in which a young street tough (DiCaprio) grows into his late father's shoes in the course of avenging his death. Scorsese flicks trend to win over critics, but they don't have a history of seducing mass audiences or making a lot of money. One interesting side drama is the fact that the prestige of AMG, Mike Ovitz's management company, will be riding on Gangs' reception, since AMG arranged to cover a good portion of the budget and placed its top clients, DiCaprio and Diaz, in lead roles. "

Excite Com : Tidbit from the Cannes Film Festival : Scorsese is editing GONY

"Scorsese, who won the festival's top prize in 1976 for "Taxi Driver" and headed the jury in 1998, had been scheduled to appear Wednesday to present "My Voyage in Italy," about the Italian films that have influenced him as a director.

But he canceled his visit so he could finish editing "Gangs of New York," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Liam Neeson and Daniel Day-Lewis. The period movie centers on the clash between New York's Anglo-Protestant poor and the United States' next big wave of immigrants, the Catholic Irish. It was filmed in the Cinecitta studio in Rome."

Go Marty Go !
