Total Eclipse Movie Review
by Gareth - xantio.com
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and David Thewles, Total Eclipse is loosely based on a true story about the French poet Arthur Rimbaud.
When I was asked to review Total Eclipse, I wasn't too enthusiastic. I had read reviews in the past that branded this film a boring tale of homosexuality. Some film critics announced this film to be an appalling portrayal of a sadomasochistic relationship between an old drunkard and an arrogant young poet.
This film was so wrongly branded, I found it to be a very engrossing love story. Total Eclipse is about two male poets who fall in love with each other. I learned that sexuality is just a small part of the plot, and what Total Eclipse is really about is the life of Arthur Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his meeting with the fellow poet Paul Verlaine (David Thewlis).
The love of the two poets' is realistically developed throughout the film, starting with friendship, in which the two writers begin to know important things about each other and discover that they have a lot in common. Romance follows their friendship, and the scene in which the first kiss happens is beautiful and deeply touching.
Contrary to most people's beliefs, Total Eclipse does actually contain a lot about Rimbaud's and his work; although it is not explicitly quoted.
This is a beautiful film about love, lust, passion and revenge. I would recommend this film to anyone, especially those who are eager to see Leonardo naked; although this really is no real reason to see it. Watch it because it is a great love story.
Thanks a lot to Treggy !
