PARISIAN PREMIERE: ONE FOR THE AGES

2003-01-06 - A unique night of movie magic and elemental surprise marked the Paris opening of GANGS OF NEW YORK. With it snowing for the first time in 15 years, Paris gleamed white as the procession of limousines pulled up to the theatre just off the famed Champs Elysees. Among the attendees were, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Martin Scorsese and the first lady of French cinema, Bridgette Bardot. After producers Harvey Weinstein and Graham King gave their presenting speeches, all hunkered down to experience the epic American film for the first time on French soil.

Afterwards, the crowd erupted in delight as the ending credits rolled to U2's riveting and inspired theme. Later on, all joined in celebration at Man Ray, a swanky Parisian nightclub. DiCaprio was encouraged that the crowd received the film so well and sat with his family, dining, as they watched over the festivities. Among some of the perks of the party were delicious Thai hors d'oeuvres, thumping hip-hop music and a wonderful urban-zen ambience.

Early the next day, DiCaprio left for London for yet another premiering of the film. Although the film speaks about America and its history, so far it has been received in Europe very well.
